Half-Day Redfish and Trout Charter in Corpus Christi

Ready to get on some serious fish? Captain Doug Allen's 5-hour morning charter on the Laguna Madre is exactly what you're looking for. This isn't some cookie-cutter fishing trip – Doug's been working these waters for years and knows exactly where to put you on redfish, speckled trout, black drum, and flounder. You'll launch at sunrise when the fish are most active and the conditions are prime. Whether you're a seasoned angler looking to dial in your technique or someone who just wants to have a good time on the water, Doug's got you covered. All your gear is included, from rods and reels to tackle and bait, plus you'll get hands-on instruction that'll make you a better angler. This is a private charter for up to 2 people, so you're not sharing the boat with strangers or fighting for the best spots.

What to Expect on the Water

The Laguna Madre is a redfish and trout paradise, and Doug knows every grass flat, oyster reef, and drop-off where these fish hang out. You'll start early – right around sunrise – when the water's calm and the fish are feeding aggressively. This timing isn't just about comfort; it's strategic. Morning hours offer the best bite, especially in warmer months when fish move deeper as the day heats up. Doug runs a clean, well-maintained boat that's perfect for navigating the shallow flats and structure where inshore species love to ambush baitfish. The Laguna Madre system offers incredible diversity – one minute you're sight-casting to tailing reds in knee-deep water, the next you're working a deep channel for hefty trout. Doug's approach is hands-on but relaxed. He'll position the boat perfectly, point out fish when he sees them, and adjust tactics based on what's working that day. The 5-hour window gives you plenty of time to work different spots without feeling rushed.

Techniques and Tackle Setup

Doug's got all the gear dialed in for Laguna Madre fishing. You'll be using medium-light spinning rods paired with reels spooled with 15-20 pound braid – perfect for feeling those subtle trout bites while having enough backbone for big reds. Depending on conditions and what's biting, you might be throwing soft plastics on jig heads, working topwater lures over grass flats, or drifting live bait near structure. Doug's tackle box is stocked with local favorites: Bass Assassin plastics, MirrOlure hardbaits, and Gulp! shrimp that drive trout crazy. When targeting redfish, expect to work shallow water where you can actually see the fish – it's visual fishing at its best. For trout, you'll likely focus on drop-offs and grass lines where these fish stage to feed. Doug's instruction goes beyond just casting and retrieving. He'll teach you how to read the water, identify productive structure, and adjust your presentation based on fish behavior. If you're new to saltwater fishing, you'll learn the differences between freshwater and inshore techniques. Experienced anglers will pick up local tricks and refined approaches specific to these waters.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Redfish are the crown jewel of Laguna Madre fishing and the main reason anglers keep coming back. These copper-colored bruisers average 20-28 inches in these waters, with plenty of oversized bulls mixed in – like David's 33-incher that tipped the scales at nearly 14 pounds. Reds are year-round residents here, but fall and early winter offer peak action when schools of fish push into the shallows to feed heavily before colder weather. What makes redfish so addictive is their aggressive nature and the variety of ways you can catch them. Some days you'll spot them tailing in inches of water, their copper backs and black spots clearly visible as they root for crabs and shrimp. Other times they'll blow up on topwater lures in spectacular fashion. When a good red takes off on its first run, you'll understand why these fish have such a devoted following.

Speckled trout are the most consistent biters in the Laguna Madre system and your best bet for steady action throughout the trip. These beautiful fish with their distinctive spots and sharp teeth typically run 14-20 inches, with trophy trout over 25 inches caught regularly during peak seasons. Spring and fall are prime time for specks, when they move shallow to feed on shrimp and small baitfish. Trout fishing requires more finesse than redfish – they're spookier and more selective about presentations. Doug will show you how to work soft plastics with subtle twitches that drive trout wild, or how to walk a topwater plug during low-light periods when these fish feed aggressively on the surface. The fight might not be as bulldogging strong as a redfish, but trout make up for it with acrobatic jumps and head-shaking runs.

Black drum are the heavyweights of the inshore game, and the Laguna Madre holds some impressive fish. These bronze-colored battlers can reach 30+ pounds and provide arm-burning fights that test your endurance. Drum are most active during cooler months, particularly winter and early spring when they move into shallow bays to spawn. They're primarily bottom feeders, crushing crabs and shell

Learn more about the species

Black Drum

Black drum are the heavyweights of our bay system, typically running 10-30 pounds with some monsters hitting 50+. These dark, powerful fish love crushing oysters and crabs with their pharyngeal teeth, so you'll find them around oyster reefs, muddy flats, and structure in 2-15 feet of water. Spring is prime time when they school up for spawning - that's when you hear their famous drumming sounds underwater. They're built like tanks and fight accordingly, making long, stubborn runs that test your drag. The smaller ones under 15 pounds are great eating with firm, white meat. Here's the key: use fresh blue crab or cut mullet on a sliding sinker rig, and fish it right on bottom near oyster beds. When they pick up the bait, give them time to mouth it before setting the hook - they're not in any hurry.

Black Drum

Redfish

Redfish are the crown jewel of our Laguna Madre fishing - bronze-backed beauties with distinctive black spots near their tails. Most run 20-28 inches, but we see plenty of slot fish and some real bulls over 30 inches. They cruise super shallow flats, often with their backs out of water, around grass beds, oyster reefs, and muddy shorelines in 1-4 feet. Year-round fishing here, but spring and fall are phenomenal when they school up. What makes them special is their power - they make blistering runs and never give up easy. Plus, slot-sized fish are fantastic on the table with mild, sweet meat. The key is sight fishing with topwater plugs or soft plastics. When you spot one tailing, cast well ahead of where it's moving and work your lure slowly past its nose. Don't cast right on them - spook easy in shallow water.

Redfish

Sea Trout

Speckled trout are our bread-and-butter fish here in Corpus - sleek, spotted beauties that run 14-20 inches on average with some quality fish pushing 24+ inches. They love grass flats, drop-offs, and sandy pockets in 2-8 feet of water, feeding on shrimp, small crabs, and baitfish. Spring through fall are your best bets, especially early morning and evening when they're actively feeding. What guests love is their aggressive strikes and acrobatic fights - they'll jump and make strong runs. Plus, they're some of the best eating fish in the bay with delicate, flaky white meat. The trick is working soft plastics or live shrimp under a popping cork over grass beds. Keep your retrieve slow and steady - when that cork disappears, set the hook immediately because they have soft mouths that tear easily.

Sea Trout

Southern Flounder

Southern flounder are masters of disguise - these flat, oval-shaped fish bury themselves in sand and mud with both eyes on their left side, waiting to ambush prey. You'll find them around 15-18 inches, though bigger ones push 25+ inches. They love shallow bays, grass flats, and muddy bottoms where they feed on shrimp, crabs, and small baitfish. Fall and winter are prime time when they move through our area heading to spawn offshore. What makes them special is that color-changing ability and how they fight once hooked - plus they're excellent table fare with sweet, flaky meat. My tip: drift slowly over muddy flats with live shrimp on a light jig head, letting it bounce bottom. When you feel that subtle tap, count to three before setting the hook - they need time to fully grab the bait.
